What SWOOP offers to women involved
in our projects makes SWOOP membership nearly self-perpetuating. SWOOP seems
to strike a chord with women who want to “give back” to
their communities in a very “hands-on” way. As
SWOOP’s numbers grow, its reputation spreads. When
people in other areas learn about SWOOP, they exclaim, “We
need a SWOOP in our community!” By 2004, individuals
and groups in other cities in North Carolina, as well as
in several other states, and even in Canada had expressed
an interest in starting SWOOP chapters. Therefore,
the SWOOP board decided to license its first chapter in Wilmington,
North Carolina, with other chapters soon to follow.
SWOOP now receives, on average, five to ten emails per week
from women asking to join. SWOOP is open to all women,
regardless of race, sexual orientation, color, religion,
creed, political beliefs, age, national origin, linguistic
and language differences, socio-economic status, height,
weight, marital status, or (dis)ability.
